Not to be confused with Giant Crab (HSW) or Crab Boss (HSP2)

The Giant Enemy Crab, more commonly referred to as the Giant Crab, is the main antagonist of Hungry Shark Evolution. It is a massive crab that can be found inside the Crab Lair in Hungry Shark Evolution, and in the Caves of Doom in Hungry Shark: Part 2. They are powerful enemies that are larger than most sharks. There are four types of Giant Crabs (from weakest to strongest):

  • Red Giant Crab
  • Yellow or Green Giant Crab
  • Blue Giant Crab
  • Black Giant Crab (largest, can be fought for an unlimited number of times although it only spawns once every session. After defeating the crab, you have to start a new stage to encounter the crab again).

Note: Quitting the game will not make you lose coins or gems you collected in the previous session.

The Giant Crabs of each tier are much bigger and stronger than the previous tier.

Danger Rating[]

All Giant Crabs have a danger rating of "Extreme" according to the museum. However, each Giant Crab deals a different amount of damage per attack:

Red: 28

Green/Yellow: 43

Blue: 55

Black: 70

Finding the Crab Lair[]

The Crab Lair is located near the farthest point of your map to the left (in Hungry Shark Evolution). It is marked by a bright orange symbol on your map. The entrance to the Crab Lair is a dangerous area, as underwater volcanoes can scorch your shark. However, there are some Blob Fish at the entrance to the crab lair so they will help recover a large amount of health.

Defeating the Giant Crab .[]

The Giant Crabs cannot be instantly eaten like other creatures or prey in Hungry Shark Evolution, not even by the largest playable shark (currently Sharknarok). The Giant Crab swipes at your shark with its pincers. You must dodge these pincers while remaining in range of the crab. After the third swipe, the crab will become exhausted and will reveal its 'Weak Spot'. Ramming into the 'Weak Spot' with boost will deal massive damage to the crab. How much damage depends on which shark you are playing as. If you take too long, it will recover and once again hide its weak spot. Repeat this until the crab is in agony, in which it will shriek in pain and allow you to launch a finishing blow at the 'Weak Spot'. After dealing the blow, the Giant Crab then breaks apart and you get the "Super Snack!", "Mega Meal!", or "Giant Tyrant!" Accolades.

Note: After the Giant Crab shrieks in pain and expose his weak spot, he will not recover from that state. In this scenario, you can actually leave the Crab Lair and do anything else then come back later. The Giant Crab will remain in the same state until you decide to deal the final strike to the Giant Crab. You can also wait until Gold Rush is in effect to strike down the crab to get more points out of the multiplier (depends on the chosen shark).

Receiving damage from Giant Crab gives accolade "Snap!"

Defeating Red Giant Crab Without Crab Fork With Reef Shark: Hit 5 times

Defeating Green Giant Crab Without Crab Fork With Reef Shark: Hit 6 times

Defeating Black Giant Crab Without Crab Fork With Tiger Shark and Electro Shark: Hit 10 times

With Great White Shark and Robo Shark: Hit 9 times

With Megalodon, Big Daddy, Mr Snappy and Alan, Destroyer of Worlds: Hit 5 times

With Moby Dick: Hit 3 times

With Crab Fork equipped With Tiger Shark: Hit 6 times

With Great White Shark: Hit 5 times

With Megalodon, Big Daddy, Mr Snappy, Alan Destroyer of Worlds and Moby Dick: Hit 3 times

With Sharkjira (or higher) or Shar-Khan & Crab fork: Hit 2 times

For unknown reasons (perhaps a bug or for balancing reasons), Moby Dick still needs 3 hits even with the Crab Fork equipped. It does not reduce the number of hits required to 2 or 1.

For any 'Shark' stronger than the Great White, it is recommended to fight giant crab early to prevent extensive health drain in the later stages of the game.

Defeating Black Giant Crab with Moby Dick can be challenging as Moby Dick is large thus difficult to avoid attacks. The distance between the Giant Crab and Moby Dick could be too close to be able to boost properly, not to mention the rapid health drain without Little Dickie.

Luminite is NOT recommended, as its long body makes it harder to land a hit and easier to get hit.

The Crab Fork can help you kill the crab faster by inflicting double damage on him, but it is not available on some devices. It costs 100 gems to purchase.

Top Secret Lab Sharks are not recommended as those sharks have rapid health drain and some have an insufficient boost or are not fast enough to hit Giant Crab's weak spot before it recovers.

Top Secret Lab Sharks has to be level 9 or 10 to make Black Giant Crab appear. For some reason, Natasha, The Narwhal can't fight Black Giant Crab.

Another factor is the Top Secret Lab sharks can't equip accessories like the crab fork or items that increase boost that standard sharks can equip.

The Robo Shark doesn't need to boost to hit submarines and Giant Crabs and can hit the weak spot just by swimming at a regular speed.

Update: Mines that are shot by the Robo Shark WILL NOT damage the Giant Crab even if it reveals its weak spot.

Controlling the Robo Shark is easier than controlling the other sharks and since it can't boost underwater the player only has to move the Robo Shark into and out of the range of the Giant Crab's pincers.

Health will go down as you fight the crab. It might be hard to eat and dodge the pincers at the same time. Consider buying a baby to help you consume the crabs, tunas, and blobfish wandering nearby to slow down health drain.

Kraken is the best shark for this fight due to its strength, which allows it to defeat a Black Giant Enemy Crab in just two hits with crab fork equipped. Amongst sharks, that can two hit kill a Black Giant Enemy Crab, Kraken spawns closest to the Crab Lair. Kraken does somewhat lack in agility compared to other sharks.

Sharknarok is the second best shark recommended for this fight due to its strength, agility, and close spawn to the Crab Lair. With Crab Fork equipped, it can kill a Black Giant Enemy Crab in just two hits. Sharknarok also has great agility, which is useful quickly dodging attacks as well as triggering the next attack. Amongst sharks that can defeat a Black Giant Enemy Crab in two hits, Sharnarok spawns second closest to the Crab Lair.

Crab Farming[]

  • Farming the Black Giant Crab is currently the fastest way to earn gems
  • Black Giant Crab gives 3 gems per kill
  • The best shark to use is Kraken. Although Kraken has slow boost speed and low agility, Kraken has the closest spawn amongst large sharks, allowing for the fastest entry into the crab lair. Kraken is also a big shark, which can two shot a Black Giant Crab if Crab Fork is equipped.
  • Upgrade Kraken to max for faster kills
  • Items to equip (strongly recommended): Lava Baby (get past the lava without taking damage), Crab Fork (2 hit kill the giant crab)
  • Items to equip (recommended but more cost prohibitive): Baby Pinata, Firework, Custard Pie Hat, or any other item that gives speed, boost, or boost speed. These items allow for a faster entry into the crab lair. With Kraken, speed and boost are less important and only boost speed is needed as Kraken should be able to boost all the way to the crab lair.
  • Depending on the amount of recommended items equipped and gameplay skill, a sub 35 second kill is possible. Sub 0:30 may not be possible.
  • A gem per hour rate of over 100 is reasonable. Depending on how fast the player is able to kill the Black Giant Crab and switch between runs, a gem per hour rate of over 200 is possible.
  • The video recorded below is a 32.5 second Giant Black Crab kill. Crab Fork, Lava Baby, Baby Pinata, Custard Pie Hat, and Fireworks are equipped in the run.

Run Debrief and Instructions

  1. First, dive down downward to the left and use boost.
  2. Smash through the horizontal piece of weakened rock then quickly level out to be moving pretty much straight left.
  3. Dive downward over the rock in the middle (can be seen at 0:04 on the timer)
  4. Holding boost, navigate the passageway to the Crab Lair. A roughly 6 second entry was achieved (entry time is measured from the start of the entry animation).
  5. Once the entry animation finishes, move leftwards and slightly up and press boost until you reach the crab.
  6. Stay inside the crab's attack range until it attacks. Then move upwards slightly with boost to do the first dodge.
  7. Once the crab almost finishes it's attack animation, turn your shark's head towards the crab and barely get in range. Observe whether the crab does a single or double attack as the attack animation for a single attack is shorter. You want to turn back towards the crab as quickly as possible to trigger the next attack.
  8. Once the crab attacks, bob your shark's head upwards. Kraken does somewhat lack agility so this may require some practice.
  9. Repeat steps 9-10.
  10. Once you dodge the crab's third attack, turn back towards the crab and boost towards the center of the top of its carapace. Now you've completed the first cycle of the boss fight. In the video, this was completed at 0:17 on the timer.
  11. Quickly eat some food to restore your shark's health while the crab runs around then follow the crab.
  12. Stay with the crab in order to begin the cycle as quickly as possible.
  13. Repeat steps 8-12 for the second cycle. The second cycle was completed at 0:30 on the timer.
  14. Either wait 3 seconds or just repeated boost ram the boss crab while it performs its defeat animation. After 3 seconds, you can kill the crab. The run in the video was completed at 0:32 on the timer. Congrats! You just beat the Black Giant Enemy Crab!

Trivia[]

  • If players take a closer look, it can be seen that, unlike the Red, Green, and Blue Giant Crabs whose colors are identical to their name, the Black Giant Crab differs with the presence of some kind of "green" colored stripe design present on and at the edge of its carapace and alternate black and green bands on its appendages and claw legs.
  • His gender is confirmed to be male, as his trailer states "...and he's not happy".[1]
  • You might have to defeat the other giant crabs and play several games to find the Giant Black Crab. When you defeat the Black Giant Crab, you can fight him again more than once. And once you move on to the black crab, the other three weaker and smaller giant crabs will never spawn again.
  • You have to dodge the pinch three times consecutively without taking damage before the Giant Crab reveals its weak spot. If your shark receives damage from the Giant Crab, it will reset the counters (Example: You have dodged twice but got pinched on the third time, you have to dodge 3 times again before it reveals the weak spot).
  • For unknown reasons, once you have reached the Black Giant Crab, only the Tiger Shark and more powerful sharks can fight the Black Giant Crab. Reef Shark, Mako Shark and Hammerhead shark can enter the crab lair, However, the Black Giant Crab doesn't appear like the previous weaker Giant Crab (Red, Green, Yellow, Blue). It could be a glitch or the developers simply decided that these sharks are too weak to fight the Black Giant Crab.
  • There was a bug in which the Giant Crab would suddenly glide sideways and fly through the water. In a few cases, it would glitch through the top of the Crab Lair and as a result the player would not be able to damage it anymore. This glitch appears to be fixed.
  • Some sharks are bigger than the Red Giant Crab but cannot gobble it up like a normal crab.
  • The Giant Crabs are the few creatures that cannot be defeated in a single attack (others being the small and large diving cages and Seal Mom unless it is defeated with explosive weapons).
  • It's extremely difficult to kill it with an Ice Shark or Natasha since they become slower when boosting.
  • It is rare that you find nothing in the Crab Lair (no crab), although when you have eaten all other crabs except the Black Giant Crab, he will rarely not appear - however, small prey such as tuna fish and Tiny crabs will still appear.
  • The in-game loading hints refer to the Giant Crab as the "Giant Enemy Crab" and said to "attack its weak spot". When hit, it formerly showed the accolade "Massive Damage!". This is a reference to Sony's infamous E3 2006 press conference, during which the PlayStation 3 was shown off.
  • Moby Dick is bigger than the Red Crab but smaller than the Black one.
  • The Giant Crab and the Kempy Bass are the only creatures that do not respawn in the same round. However, more than one Kempy Bass can spawn more than outside the Kempy Cave.
  • Behemoth's Beam-emoth ability can damage, but not kill, the Giant Crab.
  • The Gaming Beaver in a video of his used Sharkjira's Atomic Breath during Gold Rush and did damage to the crab, but the beam didn't kill the crab without boosting.
  • The Titanic Zone has frozen dead exoskeletons of Blue Giant Crabs as props in the map.
  • Contrary to popular belief, the Giant Crab wasn't present yet in the first few versions of Hungry Shark Evolution, being added in a later update. When a player attempted to access the Crab Lair when it wasn't added yet, the gate is locked and a sign saying "out to lunch" is hung on it.
    • The "out to lunch" sign implies that the Giant Crab is away from its lair, but it may be a pun on "out to launch" as well, as the Giant Crab was still yet to be added.
    • The "out to lunch" sign also appears on low-end devices that cannot support the Giant Crab.
