Hungry Shark Primal is a cancelled game in the Hungry Shark franchise, set in prehistoric times. The game was released in open beta in the Philippines on April 21, 2023 via the Google Play store, with a full official release initially set for later in 2023.[1] It was initially announced in February 2022 as a concept, with several other concepts for a sequel to Hungry Shark World such as "Hungry Shark Mythos" and "Hungry Shark: Space Edition", while a poll was hosted for players to vote for which title would they like to see next. Hungry Shark Primal received the most votes and eventually had a soft launch.
The game was delisted from Google Play on September 14, 2023, coinciding with the announced closure of Ubisoft London. On January 27, 2025, it was officially announced that the game would not continue development.[2]
Features[]

Lio in action with Frenzy activated
Hungry Shark Primal is an underwater adventure and the newest installment in the franchise. It takes place in an ancient era with several prehistoric creatures, such as dinosaurs, ancient fish, reptiles, cavemen and of course, prehistoric sharks. The game's time period does not appear to be a specific realistic one, as many animals that did not actually co-exist in real life (such as dinosaurs and humans) appear together, and the 6 playable characters did not all live during the same era either. Like in previous installments, the overall premise is the same; devour countless creatures as a shark with endless hunger. There are several ancient creatures to feast on, as well as many enemies to fight. New and unique prehistoric hunters are available to play as in this game, with Dunk (formerly Creto) as the starter shark.
This game is the first installment in which prey have healthbars. Their health is depleted by biting, or via your shark's ability, and they will be eaten upon losing all health.
Prior to the release of v0.1.5, the game utilized energy mechanics. Each shark had different max amounts of energy it could store, and if a game session was played, a single energy unit would be depleted. Once every energy unit had been depleted, the shark could not be used for a while; the player would have to wait for its energy to recharge so they could use the shark again. In the meantime, other sharks whose energy had not been depleted could be used.
In version 0.1.6, missions were added. Each mission rewards 100, 200 or 500 coins when completed. And when 25 missions are completed every six days, 1000 coins and 100 gems are awarded.
As of v0.1.7 the game is tougher, more creatures have health bars and also collectibles have been added in-game, like health and Frenzy boosters, coins, gems and even trophies.
Compared to previous games, Hungry Shark Primal does not have Gold Rush. Instead, it has a similar mode known as Frenzy, in which the shark becomes invincible and can eat anything for a short duration. During Frenzy, all prey gains an orange tinge. Coins and Gems are not collected by eating prey that rewards currency unlike previous games, but rather by collecting Trophies.
To unlock sharks, coins and gems are not used. Rather, you must collect all the bones needed to finish a fossil puzzle. The bones are collected by earning Trophies, and once every bone has been collected in the fossil, the shark is available to unlock. Coins and gems are merely for upgrading the shark.
The Multiplier in this game is also different. It has decimal numbers, and once the Frenzy is activated, it cannot be upgraded to a larger number, unlike Gold Rush. Plus, times 5 seems to be the highest Multiplier. The Multiplier also has a depletion bar just below it, indicating for how long it will last.

The old main menu. It has since been replaced.
Unlike previous installments, Primal doesn't actually have a specific order of sharks, that in the other two games implies that a certain shark is better than the one below it. Instead you get to play and unlock the creatures in any order you wish. Also despite the sharks being ordered in sets of Common, Rare, and Epic, there is not much difference between all of them during gameplay. Common sharks may be considered by a player only slightly inferior to Rare sharks and Rare sharks slightly inferior to Epic Sharks.
All sharks fall under three classes; these being All-Rounder (Creto and Thal), Brute (Lio and Dunk), and Speedy (Aquilo and Rhizodus).
A Store is planned to be implemented into the game, but it currently has not been added. As of v0.1.7., the Store's "Coming Soon" button has been removed, leaving the possibility of its addition unconfirmed.
Biomes[]
In Hungry Shark Primal, there is one large map that constantly rotates at specific areas. There are currently two areas known as Biomes in the map; the Jungle and the Swamp. The whole map is vast, bigger than each Hungry Shark World map and comparable to the main Hungry Shark Evolution map.

Trivia[]
- At its concept release, it was known as "Hungry Shark: Prehistoric Edition" before finally being named Hungry Shark Primal as seen in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6OZnlZScIkQ
- It is likely that the only sharks that will be added are prehistoric animals, and likely more non-shark creatures, though this may change.
- This is the second Hungry Shark title to be tagged "A Ubisoft Original". The first is Hungry Shark World.
- Hungry Shark Evolution is not tagged "A Ubisoft Original" as it was released while Future Games of London was still an independent studio.
- Unlike previous installments, Dunk is much smaller and less destructive than its original iterations. Dunkleosteus was once accepted to be around the length of a Great White Shark, while Hungry Shark Evolution and World exaggerated its size even further. Recent studies place the Dunkleosteus at a meager 4.1 meters, which is reflected more accurately in this game.
- Although, the potential 10 meter length of Dunkleosteus is still considered a possibility, but not a probability, and the 4.1 meter current estimate is considered more accurate.
- Several strange background props/Easter eggs appear in the Jungle and Swamp Biomes.
- Above the water, a wrecked flying saucer with a claw arm, as well as several cave paintings showing it abducting a fish can be seen. This is a reference to one of FGOL's oldest games, Grabatron.
- A massive Megalodon jaw can be found, whose teeth are the same size as a human. This may be a reversed callback to Hungry Shark Evolution where Big Daddy was stated to have made Megalodon extinct (though this is untrue in real life, Dunkleosteus existed about 382 to 358 million years ago during the late Devonian Period, far before the Megalodon which existed for 20 to 3.6, or some say 2.3 million year ago).
- In Hungry Shark Evolution Big Daddy was also oversized at first, at 30 meters, which is not realistic. Big Daddy was later shrunk to 14 meters which is still oversized by 10 meters. This may be because Big Daddy is a different species of Dunkleosteus from Dunkleosteus terrelli.
- A sunken temple with statues of what appears to be human-shark hybrid warriors appears underwater. The same statues are also randomly scattered over the two maps.
- A massive clam with a glowing pearl in it can be found. Another massive clam, albeit a closed one, is seen in the background.
- Several sound effects from Hungry Shark World are reused in this game, mainly the vocals in Gold Rush used for Frenzy, the button sound effects, the Starving/Health Critical sounds, and the Multiplier jingles.
- Currently only 2 out of the 6 current creatures in this game are sharks, those being Creto and Aquilo. Dunk, Lio, Rhizodus and Thal are not sharks, but rather prehistoric fish and reptiles. In fact, even Aquilolamna being a shark is debatable, and some consider it merely an elasmobranch. If we take this into account then only Cretoxyrhina is an actual shark.
- However, the Aquilolamna is widely considered to be an actual shark, that just possesses more extraordinary characteristics like its very long pectoral fins, at 1.9 meters, which even exceeded the creature's very own length, at 1.65 meters to 1.9 meters.
- Hungry Shark Primal may be a prequel to Hungry Shark World or Evolution, or may somehow be connected to the main series in mysterious ways, though more insight into the connection is needed.
- Hungry Shark Primal's main menu uses stock music, though this may change.
- Based on the loading screen and the game's icon, Dunkleosteus appears to be the game's mascot and flagship shark. This makes it the first Hungry Shark game whose mascot is not a shark species.
- This also makes it the first game in the franchise whose icon does not have the Great White Shark or has the Great White Shark as its mascot, unless the original icon of Hungry Shark World which showcased the Bull Shark is counted.
- Here are some HSP shark designs that very unfortunately got lost when the game got shelved: https://ichidan.artstation.com/projects/BXg5Jk

Background Creatures[]
These creatures appear as background-exclusive NPCs that cannot be eaten nor can deal damage. Whether they will be fully implemented as prey soon is up to debate.
Unused Prey[]
These creatures do not spawn in game, but their models and data can be found in the game's files. Their gib models (slices of the creature that appear when killed) have been datamined and put together to show the full models which are currently not used. Some of these may be implemented in a future update.
